PlayStation Network Down? PSN Not Working? It's Just Your Pre-Scheduled Aug ... -

Don’t worry if PlayStation Network goes down or doesn’t seem to be working tonight, Aug. 18. It’s not that PSN isn’t working, it’s not that the PlayStation Network just mysteriously went down for no reason, it’s much more benign than that. For an hour and a half early on Aug. 18, PSN will be going down for some routine maintenance and improvement.

As the PlayStation Network Status page puts it:

“Routine maintenance and improvements for PlayStation™Network will be performed for approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes on Tuesday, August 18, 00:00 AM PDT (August 18, 7:00 AM GMT) to August 18, 1:30 AM PDT (August 18, 8:30 AM GMT). Anyone who already has an account can still sign in to their PlayStation™Network profile, play games, and use most applications while this maintenance is carried out.

You will not be able to access Account Management, PlayStation™Video, or complete a purchase in the PlayStation®Store during this maintenance. We apologize for any inconvenience.

We recommend activating your PS4™ console as your primary console before maintenance begins for the best experience. You will only need to do this once and will remain in effect for all future maintenances: How and why to activate your PS4 console as primary.

We strive to ensure that PlayStation™Network services are available at all times, but occasionally we must take PlayStation™Network offline to perform essential maintenance and implement feature enhancements. We are working hard to reduce the duration of each maintenance.”

The steps to activate your PS4 console as primary are very simple, and are as follows :

  1. Activate your PS4 as your primary PS4 the first time you sign-in to your PSN account, during the sign-in process;

  2. After signing in to your PSN account, go to “PSN,” then select “Activate as Your Primary PS4,” then select “Activate.”

PlayStation makes it very easy to activate/deactivate your PS4 as primary. Check out these notes about what it means to have a PS4 designated as primary:

  • “You can activate only one PS4 system per account.

  • If a user activates a system with his or her account, other users on the system can use applications and enjoy some PlayStation Plus benefits from that account, even if that user is not logged in.

  • To enjoy certain PlayStation Plus benefits, you must subscribe to the service.

  • You can deactivate a PS4 system only from that system. Deactivate the PS4 system before transferring or disposing of it.

  • If multiple users have activated the system as their primary PS4 system, deactivate it for each user.

  • Depending on the type of content, you might not be able to deactivate all of the activated systems using this page.

  • is only available in certain countries and regions.”

So don’t freak out about the brief system maintenance. It’ll be over in a mere hour and a half. Hang in there!
